Pursue Wisdom
Proverbs 2:1-12:
David Thomas (8:30, 9:45, 11:15) & Susan Elkow (5:15) ~ July 6, 2008

David Thomas Notes:

Where has all our "information" brought us?

Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? I Corinthians 1:20

On this question everyone feels that only his answer is the right one! But although being a "know-it-all" makes us feel important, what is really needed to build the church is love. If anyone thinks he knows all the answers, he is just showing his ignorance. But the person who truly loves God is the one who is open to God's knowledge. I Corinthians 8:1-3 [LB]

If God said, "I'll give you one thing, anything you want..."

My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. Proverbs 2:1-5

Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do! Proverbs 4:7 [NLT] See also II Chronicles 1:7-10, Ecclesiastes 9:17-18, and Matthew 11:25-26 and 13:44)

Knowing the mind of God and acting accordingly -

Knowing God results in every other kind of understanding. Proverbs 9:10b [LB]

For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. Proverbs 2:6-8

How does a person become wise? The first step is to trust and reverence the Lord! Proverbs 1:7 [LB] (See also Job 12:13, Psalm 19:7, 111:10, and 119:98-99; Isaiah 28:29; and II Timothy 3:15)

Wisdom is a lifestyle. It's what makes life work.

Then you will understand what is right and just and fair-every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you and understanding will guard you. Proverbs 2:9-11

[Solomon] wrote these proverbs to teach his people how to live-how to act in every circumstance... Proverbs 1:2 [LB] (See also Ephesians 5:15 and James 3:13)

Would you choose wisdom?

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5

The secret is Christ himself; in him lie all God's treasures of wisdom... Colossians 2:3 [NEB]
