Luke 13:22-30:
David Thomas (8:30, 11:15) & Susan Elkow (9:45 and 5:15pm) ~ June 8, 2008
Luke 13:2230 (The Message)
He went on teaching from town to village, village to town, but keeping on a steady course
toward Jerusalem. A bystander said, "Master, will only a few be saved?"
He said, "Whether few or many is none of your business. Put your mind on your life with
God. The way to life -- to God! -- is vigorous and requires your total attention. A lot of you
are going to assume that you'll sit down to God's salvation banquet just because you've
been hanging around the neighborhood all your lives. Well, one day you're going to be
banging on the door, wanting to get in, but you'll find the door locked and the Master
saying, 'Sorry, you're not on my guest list.'
"You'll protest, 'But we've known you all our lives!' only to be interrupted with his
abrupt, 'Your kind of knowing can hardly be called knowing. You don't know the first
thing about me.' "That's when you'll find yourselves out in the cold, strangers to grace.
You'll watch Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets march into God's kingdom.
You'll watch outsiders stream in from east, west, north, and south and sit down at the
table of God's kingdom. And all the time you'll be outside looking inand wondering
what happened. This is the Great Reversal: the last in line put at the head of the line, and
the so-called first ending up last."

(The following outline used by David Thomas)
Who will be in heaven?
Someone asked him, "Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?" Luke 13:23
A wise man thinks much of death, while the fool thinks only of having a good time now.
Ecclesiastes 7:4 [LB]
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world
through him. John 3:17 (see also II Peter 3:9 and I Timothy 2:4)
Today's choice becomes tomorrow's reality.
Many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. ... Indeed there are those who are
last who will be first, and first who will be last. Luke 13:24, 30
He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord.
II Thessalonians 1:89
Jesus knows the difference between familiar acquaintance and yielded friend.
Then you will say, "We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets." But he will
reply, "I don't know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!" There
will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and
all the prophets of God, but you yourselves thrown out. Luke 13:2628
How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the
Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that
sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? Hebrew 10:29
Imagine the victory banquet to come!
People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the
feast in the kingdom of God. Luke 13:29
Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has
destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his
enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. I Corinthians 15:2426
"Make every effort to enter through the narrow door." Luke 13:24
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, ... how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen
gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Matthew 23:37 (see also Romans 9:23)
This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy
that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out. Matthew 16:18 [The Message]
