This Is Only a Shadow
Revelation 21:1-7 & Philippians 3:20-21:
John Criswell (8:30, 5:15) & David Thomas (9:45 and 11:15pm) ~ June 1, 2008

Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer. If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already men who offer the gifts prescribed by the law. They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. Hebrews 8:3-5

He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." Revelation 21:5

To be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord ... I Corinthians 5:8 [NASV]

I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far. ... Our citizenship is in heaven. Philippians 1:23; 3:20

The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:7

God has promised us a new heaven and a new earth. II Peter 3:13 [CEV]

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Revelation 21:1-4

And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ ... Philippians 3:20

God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. I Corinthians 6:14

... who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. Philippians 3:21

If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly be also be united with him in his resurrection. ... Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. Romans 6:5, 8 (see also II Corinthians 4:10)

But someone may ask, "How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?" How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. ... So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. I Corinthians 15:35-38, 42-44

They came to life and reigned with Christ... Revelation 20:4

Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed - in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. I Corinthians 15:51-52

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. I Thessalonians 4:16

THREE ERAS OF MANKIND AND EARTH
PAST
Genesis 1-2
PRESENT
Genesis 3-Revelation 2
FUTURE
Revelation 21-22
God in Heaven, visiting Earth God in Heaven, separate yet active (indwells believers by His Spirit) God living forever with mankind on the New Earth
No Curse (universal perfection and blessing) Sin and the Curse (withdrawal of blessing, or blessing selectively given, plus common grace) No more Curse (greater blessing, deeper perfection, grace unending)
No shame Shame No shame or potential for shame
Tree of life in Eden (mankind can eat) Tree of life in Paradise (mankind cut off from) Tree of life in New Jerusalem (mankind can eat again forever)
River of life Rivers and nature, with glimmers of past and future River of life flows from the throne
Before redemption Unfolding drama of redemption After redemption
Sin unknown Sin corrupts; its power and penalty assaulted, defeated by Christ Sin forever removed
No death Death permeates all Death removed forever
An important limitation of this chart is its inability to fully reflect the “already and not yet” paradox of our being raised with Christ and seated with Him in Heaven, the present reality of our righteousness in Christ, and the fact that God’s new creation has already started with the death and resurrection of Christ. - from Heaven, by Randy Alcorn (Tyndale House Publishers, Inc., 2004)
