Dr. Jerry Mercer
Jerry Mercer is a retired United Methodist minister in the Kentucky Annual Conference, and is retired from Asbury Seminary where he was for twenty-seven years a professor of preaching. His service record also includes the offices of pastor, assistant pastor, and college professor. Currently he is researching subjects related to Christian spirituality. He and his wife, Ruth, attend the Fidelis Class at Centenary. Jerry served as teacher of the class until August 2003, took a break for a few months, and then resumed his duties in mid-2004. He resigned from this position on October 29, 2005.
The Fidelis Class is a large, active class of intergenerational single adults and couples (50-80s) that meets on Sunday mornings at 9:40 in the Fellowship Hall (Christian Life Center). In class Jerry encouraged discussion on the subject of the morning. He based may of his lessons on the Adult Bible Series. (See Group Photo of the Fidelis Class). Each week he augmented any published class material with detailed notes and observations. He also provided class members with a one or two page handout each week on his observations of how he saw current events in the light of Biblical truths. He called these "Two Cents Worth". These papers were the basis of this web site feature. For a two year period, Jerry provided 105 of these papers; the series ended with the publication of "Thank You" on November 9, 2002.
